May - lillies  or  Lily -of- the- Valley appear in the forest   in early spring days.
The Lily -of -the- valley has underground stems or rhizomes.
Rhizomes  have buds.
There are nutrients in the
rhizomes

Anemones, blue anemones and cowslips have rhizomes too.

In autumn  potato plant roots  have many tubers.

If   you look a  a tuber you can see small buds.

There are nutrients in the tubers.
