The
olympic games are not just a recent fashion. They first took place
in antiquity. Originally they lasted for one day, and later they were
lengthened to 5 days.
The
opening ceremonies were held on the first day. Competitors and
referees pledged to play fairly.
The boys running, wrestling and fist-fighting competitions took place
on the second day.
On
the third day, men competed. Running, wrestling, fist-fighting and
free-style events were held.
On the fourth day, horse racing took place at the racetrack, and the
pentathlon was also held. The pentathlon was made up of five events -
discus, long jump, javelin, running and wrestling. There was also a
shield race, in which each runner had to run two lengths of the stadium
wearing a helmet, knee guards, a shield and a javelin. During the race,
the runner could drop all other equipment but the shield, which he had
to carry until the end.
On the fifth and last day, the official closing ceremonies were held.
Competitors were presented with their prizes - olive branches. It was a
great honour to be a winner at the olympics.
