Kings lived in imposing castles. Originally many castles were made of
wood. Later they were mostly made of stone.

Castles were surrounded by jagged walls which had arrow slits. Behind
these walls there were walkways, along which the defenders of the castle
moved. The towers were joined by walls. The top floor of the towers was
used by watchmen, but the lower floors were occupied by storerooms.
In the cellars there were prison cells for criminals and prisoners of
war. The kings and his courts living space was an important part of
every castle. Castles usually had a courtyard in which barns, mills,
bread ovens, armouries and stables for war horses could be found.
In wartime, when the enemy attacked the country, villagers from
surrounding areas sought shelter behind the protecting walls of the
castle. They brought as many of their worldly belongings as possible.
Then there were lots of people in the castle.
Every proper castle had a secret underground tunnel which led out of the
castle. The other end of the secret passageway was carefully hidden and
was located in a forest or some other concealed place.
There are many other important structures in castles, which are not
mentioned here. If you dont know any more, then do some research and
make a list of them here.
