When a knight or peasant needed a tool or some other household goods,
they went to the workshops of different craftsmen.

Workshops and markets
appeared in castles and fortresses. It was also
important that some trade route or sea (on which a port could be built)
was nearby.
Once there were a certain number of workshops and houses a place was
called a city. Cities were given names and special rights.
A mayor and city governement were also chosen.
