THE CULTURE OF ANTIQUITY
In antiquity, people were able to read and write. To prove that, here is
a photograph of a clay slab found at an archaeological excavation.

Writing on clay slabs was awkward, because they were large and heavy.
For that reason people began, over time, to write on a material called
papyrus, made from water plants or reeds. Animal skins were also used
for writing on. Paper began to be used much later.

Today we no longer use ancient languages in everyday life, although
ancient languages have had a strong influence on present languages.

If people were able to read and write, that means that languages had to
have been taught somewhere. There were already quite a few schools in
ancient times. Education was valued as much then as it is today.

Do you think that all children had to go to school in ancient times?
