The Food Guide Pyramid.
The Food Guide Pyramid was designed as an easy way to show the groups of foods that make up a good diet. It also tells you that you need to eat a variety of foods from all five groups and how much of the foods from the different groups you should eat to stay healthy. Its pyramid shape  helps explain which foods you should eat more or less of. The foods that make up the pyramid's base widest  should provide the bulk  of your diet. As you go up the pyramid, the amounts of different foods you need get smaller

Recommendations for children:

  1. Encourage and support breastfeeding
  2. Children need appropriate food and physical activity to grow and develop normally. Growth should be checked regularly
  3. Enjoy a wide variety of nutritious foods
  4. Eat plenty of breads and cereals, vegetables (including legumes) and fruits.
  5. Low fat diets are not suitable for young children. For older children, a diet low in fat and in particular, low in saturated fat, is appropriate
  6. Encourage water as a drink. Alcohol is not recommended for children
  7. Eat only a moderate amount of sugars and foods containing added sugars; and
  8. Choose low salt foods
